Te Anau Central Backpackers is centrally located, an easy walk to the Te Anau town centre. Only 2 hours from Queenstown or Invercargill, and 3.5 hours from Dunedin, Te Anau is an easy and comfortable destination to access.

A variety of tour operators are based within close proximity of the backpackers and many provide pick up and drop off. Tours to Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, boat trips to Te Anau’s glowworm caves and scenic flights over Fiordland are all based within easy walking distance of our hostel.

Self Drive
Te Anau is easily accessed via provincial State Highways 6 and 94 from Queenstown, State Highways 1 & 94 from Dunedin or via Invercargill and the Southern Scenic route.

Road Conditions
All State Highways into Te Anau are fully sealed and well maintained.

The Milford Road is a spectacular alpine corridor which requires care and concentration when self-driving. Between May and November all travellers on the Milford Road must carry car snow chains at all times, these can be hired locally in Te Anau. Southern Scenic Route
The Southern Scenic Route covering 440 km begins or ends in Dunedin city and travels through Balclutha and the Catlins area to Invercargill city before taking in Riverton, Tuatapere and the gateways to Fiordland: Manapouri and Te Anau. Driving Times and Self Drive Directions
From Queenstown – 2 hours. Take SH6 south towards Invercargill for 74kms or 1 hour. Just before Lumsden take the right hand turnoff to SH94 and Te Anau for 78kms or 1 hour.

From Dunedin – 3.5 hours. Take SH1 to Gore for 150kms or 1.45 hours. From Gore take SH94 following it through to Te Anau for 140kms or 1.45hours.

From Invercargill - 2 hours or 3 hours (if taking the Southern Scenic Route). Take SH6 north to Lumsden for 74kms or 1 hour. Just past Lumsden take the left hand turnoff to SH94 and Te Anau for 78kms or 1 hour.

By Coach
Regular coach connections provide transport links to Te Anau from all of the major centres of the South Island including Queenstown, Dunedin and Invercargill. The main operators are Intercity and TracknetCheeky Kiwi Travel also provide transfers from Queenstown to Te Anau. For bookings and further information contact our friendly reception team.

By Air
You can fly to Queenstown or Invercargill with Air New Zealand, Jetstar or Qantas, and connect with a coach service or hire a car. Charter flight options by helicopter, floatplane and fixed wing aircraft are available year round.
